Newsmakers: Rep. Ginny Klevorn Talks Local Transportation Projects

10:00 AM | Saturday, April 23, 2022

Rep. Ginny Klevorn (DFL-Plymouth) is advocating for $20 million in state bonding dollars to improve County Road 47.

“I’m hopeful that since both bonding committees in the House and Senate came to Plymouth to see the roadway and the dangerous sightlines with the school there, that maybe we would have a very good chance,” said Klevorn. “County Road 47 is such a dangerous roadway and all of our community members deserve a safe place to drive and to walk.”

Plymouth Community Center

The state did contribute $5 million in bonding dollars toward the Plymouth Community Center. A lodging tax also contributes toward the cost of the expansion and renovation.

“We did get the [lodging tax] passed for 10 years. That’s roughly $7.5 million for our city, but then the other piece of it is, if we can eliminate the sunset tax, then the lodging tax could go on in perpetuity,” explained Klevorn. “So that the people who come to our community for hockey events and other big events we host in Plymouth, they would pay for the assets that they are using in our community.”

One example of a big event that Plymouth will host is the 2023 USA Hockey National High School Tournament that will be at the Plymouth Ice Center. The tournament is expected to bring in about 50 teams from all around the nation and fill more than 2500 hotel rooms.

Bus Rapid Transit on Hwy. 55

Bus Rapid Transit on Highway 55 is still on Klevorn’s list of transportation priorities.

“As we go from Plymouth to downtown [Minneapolis] to recreate or work, we would have a regular and consistent bus transit through that corridor is very important,” said Klevorn. “We have businesses that are crying for workers to come to Plymouth, in additional to the business development along 55, it’s also a way to keep those businesses viable.”
