Maple Grove Boys Soccer Edges Champlin Park for Section 5AAA Title
The Maple Grove boys soccer team edged Champlin Park 2-1 to win the Section 5AAA championship Tuesday.
Champlin Park scored first. Goalkeeper Evan Martin’s long punt bounced over a defender and Lester Arthur got to it first and scored with just under two minutes left in the first half.
Maple Grove responded quickly as a clearing attempt was blocked and Devon O’Callaghan tucked it past Martin, who charged out to challenge him. It was 1-1 at halftime.
O’Callaghan set up the game-winner in the second half, pushing a pass out to Gavin Chabica for the goal with 15 1/2 minutes left in the second half.
Maple Grove will make the 9th state tournament appearance in program history. They placed fourth in class AAA last season.
Seeding for the state tournament takes place Saturday.
