How Plymouth’s Emagine Willow Creek Turns Box Office Hits into Lasting Success
The cinematic event of the summer is smashing expectations.
When “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” swung into movie theaters in late July, it didn’t just perform—it made history. Leaping past all previous estimates, the web-slinger generated a massive $360 million in its opening weekend, taking the crown for the largest domestic box office debut of all time.
“The tracking leading up to the weekend was underestimating what we were about to see,” said Tim Holly, the director of creative for Emagine Entertainment, which runs Plymouth’s Emagine Willow Creek. “We were kind of blown away by the response—just selling out show after show after show.”
According to Holly, the summer boom is part of a larger, surprisingly strong year for cinema overall.
It’s not just the expected heavy hitters like “Super Mario Galaxy” or “Toy Story 5” driving ticket sales. The year has been marked by crowd-pleasers like the sci-fi adaptation “Project Hail Mary” and the thriller “Obsession,” proving that audiences are hungry for a wide variety of stories.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day had showtimes throughout the day on a recent Tuesday at Emagine Willow Creek in Plymouth.
The Screen vs. The Couch
So what’s driving people to ditch their streaming subscriptions and leave the living room? Theater operators believe it comes down to a fundamental shift in how people want to experience entertainment.
While home theater setups have gotten bigger and better, Holly notes that streaming on the couch simply can’t replicate the social aspect of a dark auditorium. Moviegoers agree.
“I like seeing it in theaters more because the screen’s way bigger, and I like the sound quality,” said Henry Miller, a moviegoer.
For others, the motivation is even simpler. “It’s all about the popcorn, baby,” joked local moviegoer Darrick Mattox. “It’s all about the popcorn.”
Innovating the Outing
To capitalize on this renewed interest, theaters like Emagine Willow Creek aren’t resting on their laurels. They’ve invested heavily in upgrading the physical event of “going to the movies,” introducing features designed to make an evening out feel like a true event:
- Expanded food and beverage: Moving far beyond standard concessions to offer full-service bar menus and upgraded food items.
- Premium tech: State-of-the-art projection and sound upgrades that outmatch any home setup.
- Fan-centric events: Opening-night parties featuring costumed characters, local comic book artists and interactive experiences.
“We try all different sorts of ways to be innovative and to try to up our experiences,” Holly explained.
Ultimately, the 2026 box office surge is proving that streaming services haven’t killed the silver screen—they’ve just raised the bar for what makes an outing worth it.
With a slate of anticipated heavyweights scheduled through the end of the year—including “Dune: Part Three” and “Avengers: Doomsday”—theater operators are optimistic that the momentum will carry forward.

Fresh popcorn is also a big draw for moviegoers. Emagine Willow Creek is located at 9900 Shelard Parkway, Plymouth, MN.
