Hair Loss Salon Finds Permanent Home in Plymouth

A longtime salon for those experiencing hair loss opened its doors at its new home in Plymouth. The owner says she hopes this will be the forever home for the business and a place for people to feel comfortable in their own skin.

Hair loss ‘such a sensitive subject’

For many people, a salon visit is renewing and relaxing. But for those experiencing hair loss, sometimes that trip can be sensitive — and even isolating.

After years of salon work, Alisa Halek-Schoenack wanted to make that experience special for those who need it.

“I have always loved going above and beyond when it really comes to caring for others,” Halek-Schoenack said. 

In 2018, she bought Fantasia Salon in Crystal to execute that mission. She renamed it Nedia Hair Loss Salon (Nedia is a backwards version of her son’s name, Aiden). The business moved to Minnetonka, then temporarily to Plymouth’s Aurora Tower. Its latest location as of June — on 36th Avenue in Plymouth — is positioned to be its forever home.

In every location, Halek-Schoenack has aimed to make the space both feel and look like a typical salon.

In many ways, it is one. They offer haircuts, color, nails, massages and facials.

But Nedia also has specific hair loss services — consultations, special private haircuts, and custom treatment plans and wigs for people’s specific needs.

“We created that environment to make it more approachable, especially for our hair loss guests,” Halek-Schoenack explained. “I think it’s important to have a space that’s approachable because it’s such a sensitive subject.”

Approachable is a good way to describe it. Especially when their therapy dog and mascot, Nedie, greets guests at the door. Nedie, a friendly French bulldog, is also depicted on some merchandise the business sells.

A Much-Deserved Boost

Depending on the clients’ needs and preferences, some appointments are entirely private. Others are held on the salon floor. Halek-Schoenack said one of her main goals is to help her clients feel comfortable with who they are, regardless of their level or cause of hair loss. They serve both men and women — though women is the primary client base.

“It’s not just about the wigs and the toppers. It’s about the self-care, the mental health and going that extra mile,” Halek-Schoenack said. “A simple haircut gives a lot of confidence. So I think everything that happens within Nedia creates that. But when it comes to the hair loss portion, it takes people from not even going out and doing things, to coming back into society.”

Halek-Schoenack hopes Nedia’s services boost confidence. She said she’s seen it happen.

“We love the fact that we bring people back to their families, to their friends, their lifestyles. That’s the biggest impact for us,” Halek-Schoenack said.
