Fernando, El-Amin Advance in Hennepin County Commissioner, Dist. 2 Race

Irene Fernando and Sharon El-Amin advanced in the Tuesday, Aug. 11 primary election for the District 2 seat on the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners.

The seat is currently held by Fernando, who was first elected to the board in 2018.

She drew a commanding lead in the primary, receiving 55.30 percent of the votes cast, or 16,500 votes.

El-Amin came in second with 21.05 percent of the votes cast, or 6,280 votes.

Viviana Salazar trailed in third with 15.28 percent of the votes or 4,559 votes, while Makeda Zulu came in fourth with 8.37 percent of the votes cast, or 2,498 votes.

The district covers Golden Valley, Medicine Lake, St. Anthony Village, southeast Plymouth, North Minneapolis, Northeast Minneapolis, and parts of the North Loop neighborhood.
