Maple Grove Boys Soccer Beats Champlin Park in Shootout in Section 5AAA Final
For the third straight season the Maple Grove boys soccer team beat Champlin Park in the Section 5AAA final, winning 2-1 in a shootout.
Maple Grove’s Ben Halberg scored on a blast that caromed off a defender’s body and in to give the Crimson a 1-0 halftime lead.
Deven Khamvongsouk’s corner kick went off goalkeeper Zander Waldrum and a defender and in to tie the game for Champlin Park.
Both teams had some near misses but the game stayed 1-1 through regulation and overtime.
Each team made its first four penalty kicks in the shootout.
Maple Grove goalkeeper Luke Steen, who replaced Waldrum for the shootout, stopped Champlin Park’s fifth shooter, Sam Feuerborn.
Frank Miller, playing in a cast in his first game back from a broken wrist, scored the winner as Maple Grove advanced to state for the 10th time in program history.
Seeding and matchups for the state soccer tournament will be announced Saturday.
