Local Gophers Softball Players Shine
Local Gophers softball players from the northwest metro area are excelling for a very good team.
The Gophers are the seventh overall seed for the NCAA tournament and are hosting a regional this weekend.
Freshman sensation Natalie DenHartog is having a suberb first season.
DenHartog was playing for Hopkins High School at this time last year.
She has 16 homeruns and lead the Big 10 in runs batted in with 59.
DenHartog is a first team all-conference and all Great Lakes region pick.
Senior outfielder Maddie Houlihan of Plymouth is also a key player.
The Benilde-St. Margaret’s graduate is a second team all-conference pick.
Pitcher Sydney Smith of Maple Grove has 13 wins and 3 saves.
Katelyn Kemmetmueller of Rogers earned all-defensive team honors in the Big 10.
The Gophers are slated to start regional play at 8:30 Friday night against North Dakota State.
The tournament continues Friday and Saturday, although the weather forecast doesn’t look promising.
