Cooper Football Set for First State Appearance in 25 Years
The Cooper football team is getting set for its first state tournament appearance in 25 years.
After five section final losses since 2012, the Hawks broke through to beat Armstrong 14-13 Friday in the Section 5AAAAA championship game.
Cooper was battle tested by a tough schedule this season, and they learned some lessons in their two losses as well as in close wins.
The Hawks carry an 8-2 mark into Saturday’s state class AAAAA quarterfinal game against Alexandria.
Cooper standout running back Camden Royal, who has rushed for 1,415 yards this season, was injured in the Armstrong game and may miss Saturday’s game.
Hawks quarterback Joe Russell has completed 63% of his passes for 1,858 yards and 27 touchdowns.
Junior defensive end/tight end Jaxon Howard is one of the nation’s top recruits in his class.
Wide receiver/defensive back David Connors blocked the potential tying extra point in the section final and has had an outstanding season.
Connors has 36 catches for 858 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Alexandria is 6-5 and also faced some good opponents this fall.
The Cardinals beat top seed Moorhead 42-39 in the Section 8AAAAA semifinals, then edged Bemidji 43-35 in the section final.
University of Minnesota recruit Kristen Hoskens is a dynamic threat as a receiver and runner for Alexandria.
He had 10 catches for 184 yards and two touchdowns in the section final.
Kickoff between Cooper and Alexandria is set for 1:00 p.m. Saturday at Osseo High School.
