Helmich was searching for an event that suited him as a middle school athlete a few years back.
A coach suggested he give pole vaulting a try, and he’s grown into becoming one of the state’s best vaulters.
Helmich will compete for Virginia Tech next season.
That’s after trying to repeat as Minnesota champion this June.
