Two Familiar Faces and One Newcomer Elected to Robbinsdale School Board
Three seats were up for grabs on the Robbinsdale School Board, District 281. Incumbents Helen Bassett and John Vento will return to their positions, and a former principal, Greta Evans-Becker, will join them.
Challengers running for a spot on the Robbinsdale School Board mentioned improving the relationship of the school board with the community, better financial management, and more transparency. The district has been under increased scrutiny after the reassignment of a popular principal prompted a push for a state audit. The state audit revealed “no wrongdoing” but also pointed out several areas that need to be improved.
Incumbent Helen Bassett has been on the Robbinsdale School Board since 2003. She’s has a background in public policy, administration and nonprofit management. Because of that Bassett says she’s uniquely qualified to serve in the current COVID-19 pandemic. In a statement to CCX News, Bassett said her commitment to serve all children is heightened right now, especially given what we’ve learned about disparities among the most vulnerable families. She lives in Golden Valley.
Greta Evans-Becker also lives in Crystal. She has more than 30 years of experience in education and served part of those years as a teacher in the Robbinsdale district. She also worked as a principal at Meadowbrook Elementary in Golden Valley for 12 years. Now, she says she’s ready to help make decisions for the district. Her first priority is student and staff safety and then a voice of equity, supporter of early childhood education and fiscally responsible in decisions.
Incumbent John Vento lives in Golden Valley. This is his third term on the school board. He also serves on the Minnesota School Board Association’s representative on the MN Dept. of Education’s Finance working group. Vento said he would continue to work to reduce the opportunity gap and diminish the digital divide for students.
