Spring Cleaning? Trailhead Cycling Collecting Used Bikes To Help Kids
Now that spring has sprung, you may have ventured into the garage and thought to yourself, “Oh, what a mess.” Or, “I haven’t used those bikes in years.” If it’s the latter, Trailhead Cycling has a solution for those bikes.
The local business will collect those bikes, help refurbish them and donate them to kids in need.
“We collect all those discarded, unused bikes, the ones in the garage — you know, the ones your kids have grown out of,” said Pam Sayler, owner of Trailhead Cycling.
Trailhead Cycling has partnered with the Ham Lake-based nonprofit Bikes4Kids for the past 20 years on the extraordinary effort. All the work is done by volunteers trying to make a difference.
“Everyone that cleans, touches, refurbishes, tunes is a volunteer, and most of them donate several dollars to get those bikes tuned up,” said Sayler.

Trailhead Cycling owner Pam Sayler speaks to CCX News about the bike donation drive.
Sayler said the cause is particularly important for teens who could use a bike to get to a job.
“Whether it’s Anoka County or Hennepin County, we have a lot of what we call couch friends, or friends that sleep on someone else’s couch because they’ve got a disruption in their home life,” explained Sayler. “And those kids need transportation to get to school and need transportation to get to a job — their first job so that they can earn some money so that they can move on in life. And it’s really important that they have that bicycle.”
Trailhead Cycling has two locations to drop off bikes: one in Minnetonka at Hopkins Crossroad and Highway 7 (Trailhead recently moved there from Plymouth), and another off Highway 169 and 114th Ave North in Champlin.
This Saturday, April 18, Bike4Kids will be on site at the Minnetonka location to help with collection. Everybody that drops off a bike and a $10 donation will receive a $10 gift certificate to Trailhead Cycling.
“It is super helpful if you bring a $10 bill with that donation because it offsets the cost of refurbishing that bike,” said Sayler.
