New Apartment Building Planned in Crystal
The city of Crystal is expected to get something inner-ring suburbs don’t see very often: a new apartment building.
Columbus, Ohio-based Woda Cooper Cos., an affordable housing developer, is proposing a new apartment building at the northeast corner of County Road 81 and Bass Lake Road.
The developer would purchase the property and tear down an existing office building, located at 6000 Bass Lake Road.
Woda Cooper Cos. is proposing a four-story, 44-unit complex that would feature a mix of affordable housing for several income levels. Those levels include 30 percent, 50 percent and 80 percent of area median income.
“Each unit will be income restricted, meaning a family that lives there cannot earn above a specified income level and the rents for that unit is set so they’re not spending more than 30 percent of their income on rent and utilities,” said Eric Wright, development analyst with Woda Cooper Cos.
The proposed building, called Lotus Pointe, would contain a mixture of one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom apartments, Wright said. It would include a fitness center, rooftop deck and underground parking garage.
Woda Cooper Cos. would use housing tax credits through Minnesota Housing to help fund the project.
The Crystal Planning Commission recommended approval of rezoning the property to allow for the project at its May 12 meeting. The Crystal City Council will get its first look at the proposal at its May 20 meeting.
The developer hopes to begin construction this fall, city officials said.
