J&E Cos. To Close Plymouth Plant, Lay Off Workers
J&E Cos., a precision metal manufacturing company with headquarters in Plymouth, is closing its plant there and in two other metro suburbs citing “financial difficulties.”
In addition to Plymouth, the company will close plants in Shakopee and in Lakeville.
The closures will result in laying off 145 workers, according to notices filed with the state required by the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN).
The Plymouth headquarters, located at located at 13310 Industrial Park Blvd., employs 70 workers. Jobs included in layoffs range from accounting, sales and administrative positions to engineers, skilled machinists and welders. All of the employees impacted by the layoff are not represented by a union, the notice said.
The layoffs took effect June 2.
According to the WARN notice, the company explored a potential sale of the business to keep operations going, but “those efforts failed shortly before the issuance of this notice.”
J&E Cos. has been in operations for more than 65 years, according to the company’s website.
The closure is seen as a more of a company issue and not part of a broader trend. In the state’s most recent jobs report, the manufacturing sector gained 500 jobs, up 0.2 percent.
Minnesota’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate stood at 3.2 percent in April, lower than the U.S. rate of 4.2 percent.
