Hopkins School District Picks Michael Thomas for Next Superintendent
The Hopkins School Board has selected Michael Thomas as the district’s new superintendent.
Thomas is currently superintendent of Prior Lake-Savage Area Schools. He will replace current Superintendent Rhoda Mhiripiri-Reed, who announced plans not to renew her contract in December 2025.
“I am truly honored to be selected as the next superintendent of Hopkins Public Schools,” Thomas said in a district-issued statement. “Having long admired the district, I have great respect for its strong foundation, its commitment to ensuring every student feels a sense of belonging, and the pride this community has in its schools. I look forward to listening, learning, and partnering with the Hopkins community to build on that foundation by strengthening academic outcomes, fostering a culture where each student and staff member feels they matter, and ensuring that systems and resources are aligned to support long-term success for all learners.”
Thomas is expected to start his new role on July 1.
Selection Unanimous
The school board unanimously selected Thomas at a special meeting on April 20.
“On behalf of the Hopkins School Board, I am so excited to introduce Dr. Michael Thomas as our next superintendent,” said Board Chair Shannon Andreson. “This is a leader who puts kids first, full stop. Their passion for equity, their commitment to our staff, and their vision for what Hopkins can become made the choice clear. Our district is in incredible hands. Thank you to all our wonderful candidates.
“Your experience and commitment to public education and students shines through, and we know you will continue that work, and to all who helped shape this process, thank you,” Andreson continued. “We could not have done this without your support and guidance. The Hopkins community is strong because of you. And our future is brilliant with our newest leader.”
The board is expected to approve a contract for Thomas on May 5.
The Hopkins School District includes about two-thirds of the city of Minnetonka, about half of the city of Golden Valley, and smaller portions of St. Louis Park, Edina, Plymouth and Eden Prairie.
