Golden Valley Police Report Uptick in Car Thefts, Break-ins
The Golden Valley Police Department is asking residents to be vigilant after an uptick in vehicle thefts and break-ins. Police say they’ve seen a particular increase in these types of crimes the past two weeks.
According to Golden Valley police, many of the incidents have occurred on the east side of Highway 100 and north and south of Highway 55.
Crime statistics from Golden Valley show that from January through March of last year, there were 16 theft-from-auto cases. That’s compared to 37 so far this year. During this same time period, there have been 21 stolen vehicle cases this year compared to eight last year.
Police say some residents are making it easy for criminals to get access to the property.
“We’re not seeing in these cases where they’re using force to get into somebody’s home, kicking the front door in, and invading the home, and taking items. They’re sneaking around. It’s an opportunity, unlocked door, garage door opener, unlocked service door into the house,” said Sgt. Randy Mahlen with the Golden Valley Police Department.
Police encourage residents not to leave valuables in vehicles and always close and lock garage doors. They also say stolen cars are often used to commit more serious crimes.
