Golden Valley Names Matt Clark New Police Chief
A familiar face is taking the helm at the Golden Valley Police Department.
Matt Clark, who has served as interim police chief for about six months, has been named permanent chief.
“After a thorough hiring process, we are excited to welcome Chief Clark permanently,” said Mayor Roslyn Harmon. “He came to Golden Valley at a pivotal moment, and what stood out immediately was how quickly he built trust with our officers, our residents, and City leadership. We look forward to his leadership in moving the department forward.”
Clark will succeed former Chief Virgil Green, who resigned last October following lengthy investigations into his conduct.
According to public documents, Green was accused of interfering with an internal affairs investigation. He was also accused of violating city policy for releasing unredacted body camera footage to television news media outlets during an investigation.
“I want to offer congratulations and thanks to Chief Clark for how he led the Golden Valley Police Department during the transition period,” said City Manager Noah Schuchman. “Chief Clark brings decades of experience at some of the largest departments in the state, and he’s put that expertise to work in Golden Valley from day one. Our organization is better for having him at the helm. I look forward to his leadership of the great team at GVPD.”
Clark has been a police officer since 1991. Most recently, he was the police chief of the University of Minnesota Department of Public Safety before retiring in 2025.
“I am honored to continue serving the community in this role,” said Clark. “The GVPD is a great team, and we have a bright future ahead for this department.”
The city briefly considered two external candidates for the role, but ultimately moved away from both candidates before offering Clark the chief role.
