Construction Begins Soon on Brooklyn Park Plaza
Construction begins this summer to put in something unique near a planned light rail stop in Brooklyn Park. A partnership between the city, North Hennepin Community College and the Hennepin County Library system developed a plan for a temporary park plaza. It would go on land just south of the Brooklyn Park Library.
The Brooklyn Park City Council viewed photos of examples of what could potentially go there. Plans include building a nature-based play area on the library property. The plaza would also include putting in trees and crushed granite paths and installing art pieces.
A Hennepin County Transit-Oriented Development grant would pay for $55,000 worth of upgrades. The McKnight Foundation could contribute up to $50,000 for the art pieces, such as shade structures or special benches.
City officials say the goal is to incorporate parts of the plaza into the future North Hennepin performance arts center. Construction on that project is slated to begin in three years.
