Wayzata wins state soccer championship
The Wayzata boys knew they were good enough to compete for a championship from day one this season, but they didn’t look ahead. As it turned out, Wayzata matched up with the team that beat them in last year’s class AA title game, Stillwater, in the 2017 championship. After a scoreless first half that saw Stillwater get the better of the chances, Wayzata broke the deadlock about thirteen minutes into the second half as Adi Bhati drove a ball deep into the box and Patrick Weah re-directed it into the Ponies’ net. Ethan Wagner added an insurance goal on a breakaway with 16 seconds remaining, and goalkeeper Danny Welshons and his defense kept the Ponies off the board. It’s Wayzata’s third championship in program history.
