Wayzata Boys Soccer Beats Defending State Champion Edina
The Wayzata boys soccer team didn’t get an easy opponent to start the 2020 season.
The third-ranked Trojans showed they deserve that high ranking with a 2-1 win over top-ranked and defending state champ Edina.
Wayzata dominated the first half.
After a near-miss off the crossbar just a few minutes into the game, the Trojans struck off a corner kick.
Peter Melquist’s corner kick was headed by Joe Highfield to Charlie Kassmir for a deflection goal in the 17th minute.
About 13 minutes later Mikhail Orlov threaded a great pass ahead to Kassmir, who got a shot off just as Hornets’ goalkeeper Hank Stechmann charged at him.
Kassmir’s second goal gave Wayzata a 2-0 halftime lead.
The tables turned in the second half as Edina controlled much of the play.
Matt Mason scored with about 14 minutes to play to pull the Hornets within 2-1.
Wayzata sophomore goalkeeper Jack Roach made a couple of key saves to preserve a big win in this COVID-19 shortened season.
