Providence Academy Girls Soccer Repeats as State Class A Champion
The Providence Academy girls soccer team didn’t let a little early adversity stop their quest for a second straight title.
Despite being scored on less than three minutes into the class A championship against Watertown-Mayer, the Lions rallied to win 2-1 to make it back-to-back championships.
Watertown-Mayer ran a well-executed short corner kick and Ainsley Blair scored past a screened goalkeeper Audrey Steeves on the first shot attempt of the game just 2:37 into the contest to give the Royals the lead.
Providence responded as freshman Beckett Greenway sent a nice pass ahead to her sister Maddyn Greenway, who stepped around the goalkeeper to bury it into an empty net with just under nine minutes left in the first half to make it 1-1 at halftime.
After generating some good chances in the second half, Maddyn Greenway struck again midway through the half, beating two defenders and tucking the shot under goalkeeper Lauren Grimm for what proved to be the game winner.
It was the 63rd goal of the season for Class A Ms. Soccer winner Maddyn Greenway.
It’s the second championship for the Providence girls soccer program in their fourth straight state appearance.
Watertown-Mayer made its first state tournament trip this season.
