Maple Grove Wins State Girls Golf Title
The Maple Grove girls’ golf team won the first state championship in program history Wednesday, taking the Class AAA title by 10 shots over runner-up Wayzata.
The Crimson entered the second and final round with a five-stroke lead over the Trojans.
Maple Grove shot 310 as a team Wednesday, compared to 315 for Wayzata.
Amelia Morton of Maple Grove was her team’s top finisher shooting rounds of 74 and 71 to tie for 3rd place overall.
The Crimson girls join the school’s boys program (2021) as recent state champions in the sport.
Saachi Deshmukh led Wayzata with scores of 75 and 73 and finished in sixth place.
Reese McCauley of Simley was the tournament medalist, shooting identical rounds of 68, rallying late to edge defending AAA champion Kathryn VanArragon of Blaine by two shots.
In Class AA, Providence Academy senior Grace Petzold won medalist honors. Petzold shot a two-under par score of 70 in the second and final round Wednesday giving her a two-day total of 145, three shots better than runner-up Sophie Cook of Hawley.
