Champlin Beats Chanhassen in Gopher Classic Baseball
The Champlin Legion Post 600 team defeated Chanhassen 9-6 Friday on the first day of the 96-team Gopher Classic American Legion baseball tournament.
Tanner Thompson hit a grand slam to highlight a seven-run fourth inning for Champlin, breaking a 2-2 tie.
Chanhassen scored two runs in both sixth and seventh innings but Post 600 turned a game-ending double play to end the game.
Champlin also beat Omaha Westside Friday, winning 9-1.
Pool play continues all weekend at sixteen sites around the metro area. Champlin is part of a six-team pod playing in St. Michael.
The Gopher Classic draws teams from several states and is the largest Legion baseball tournament in the country.
