CCX Sports Year in Review: Local Boys Soccer Teams Excel
It was a shortened 2020 boys soccer season without a state tournament during the COVID-19 pandemic.
That didn’t take away from the outstanding seasons for four teams in the northwest suburbs.
Breck finished 13-0-1 and ranked number one in class A. The Mustangs won the IMAC conference title and Section 5A championship.
They outscored their opponents 47-8.
Wayzata spent much of the season rated number one in Class AA, and they ended the season that way.
The Trojans were 12-1-1 and won the Lake Conference and Section 6AA titles. They also allowed only 8 goals, while scoring 51.
Maple Grove was also 12-1-1, and the Crimson won the Section 8AA title.
They didn’t allow a goal in three playoff games, and outscored foes 41-11 for the season. They were ranked third in the QRF and fifth in the coaches poll.
Champlin Park had perhaps the best team in program history, winning the Northwest Suburban Conference title and posting a 12-2-0 record.
The Rebels scored 52 goals and allowed just 15. They did fall one win short of a section title, losing to Mounds View in the Section 5AA championship.
It wasn’t a usual season and we’ll never know if Breck, Wayzata or Maple Grove would have won state titles, but it was a special year.
