Twins Fantasy Camp a Home Run for Adaptive Athletes
Young baseball fans got a chance to play ball with the professionals in Brooklyn Park Friday morning at the Twins Fantasy Camp.
The event is a free camp for kids with disabilities. Sixty of them signed up to learn the basics of baseball and softball, with accommodations made for anyone who needed them.
“I truly believe that recreation is a right, not a privilege,” said Erin Bonikowske, Brooklyn Park’s adaptive recreation specialist. “Everyone deserves the opportunity to recreate with their peers in an inclusive environment.”
The camp is typically hosted at the Todd Anderson Field in Brooklyn Park, the only wheelchair softball field in Minnesota. Friday morning, however, was rainy, so it moved into the Community Activity Center. Bonikowske said it was still a hit.
“While the weather may not have been in our favor, I am so thankful to have a fantastic partnership and backup space so we can still make this wonderful event happen,” Bonikowske said.
Fun For All
The camp is a joint effort betwen Brooklyn Park, the Minnesota Twins and Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute. The three come together to make the event accessible and exciting. Tricia Brisbine and her son, Charlie, have made it to the camp every year since 2021.
“These opportunities for us, and for my son, are few and far between. And they’re just really, really appreciated,” Brisbine said.
At this camp, they got to rotate through stations, playing catch with Twins players, volunteers, and each other.
“One of the most important things is, I think, Charlie feels welcome here,” Brisbine said. “From the moment you walk in the door, it is a welcoming feeling. And I think that is really important when you talk about fostering a sense of community.”
It doesn’t seem like Charlie is the only one. Looking around at the camp, kids have smiles on their faces.
Kids were sent home with free swag, including jerseys customized with their name and tickets to a Twins game.
The event kicks off Brooklyn Park’s Adaptive Rec Friday series. More information about the events planned for the summer are available on the city’s website.
