Robbinsdale Resident, Teacher Organizes South Minneapolis Food Drive
Mollie Olson lives in Robbinsdale and teaches at Roosevelt High School in south Minneapolis. After seeing the damage from the riots and the early closure of grocery stores in the area, she organized a food drive through the Birdtown Club Facebook page.
“I know that through what is happening in south Minneapolis that grocery stores are closed. The local Target is closed. Convenience stores are closed. And our families were in need,” said Olson. “I don’t live in south Minneapolis like a lot of our teachers do. So I couldn’t just walk out my door and help immediately. But I knew that I could count on our community because I’ve counted on our community before.”
Olson is an administrator for the Birdtown Club Facebook page and put out a call for help.
“I’ve got 46 bags, 20 boxes and probably more toilet paper and paper towels than people have seen in a long time,” laughed Olson. “I think we’re good with what we’ve collected. Right now we want to collect money. We can give that money to whatever families need and then anything left over will be given to the community to help rebuild.”
Olson plans to deliver the bags and boxes to the high school this week for distribution.
