Plymouth Plans “Buckthorn Busts”
The city of Plymouth invites volunteers to help them eradicate invasive buckthorn plants during five upcoming “buckthorn busts.” The city will provide the tools and instruction. Volunteers supply the muscle.
The invasive species of buckthorn reproduces rapidly and chokes out native plants. Volunteers can help cut down buckthorn at Maple Creek Park and Hardenbergh Open Space starting Saturday, Oct. 19.
Some volunteers enjoy the activity, like a Plymouth woman nicknamed Buckthorn Betty.
Why cut down the plant now? The leaves of a buckthorn plant remain green and are more visible in the fall.
