Osseo Planning Commission Won’t Recommend 30-Foot Tall Sign for Furniture Store
A furniture store in Osseo faced a substantial setback this week.
Furniture Manor‘s request to build new signage was voted down by the Osseo Planning Commission at its May 19. The vote is a recommendation. The Osseo City Council has the final say.
In application materials to the city, the business owner argued that furniture stores have a unique need for large signs.
“Furniture stores often have expansive showroom spaces to showcase our extensive (millions of dollars) inventory of sofas, beds, dining sets, and other furnishings,” wrote owner Venkatesh Ravula. “A 30-foot-high sign would help draw customers into our showroom, where they can explore our wide selection of products in person.”

Furniture Manor’s request to build new signage was turned down by the Osseo Planning Commission this week.
The store, located at 334 County Road 81, applied for a variance to update the sign about a year ago.
“The length of time this application has taken to be presented to the Planning Commission is due to the many complications and variations in code interpretation, as well as the staff turnover that occurred in this time period,” wrote city staff members in an agenda packet. “The previous Community Management Coordinator reviewed this file and determined that the application did not meet the criteria to be presented to the Planning Commission for potential approval.”
According to city staff, the proposed sign is 29 feet tall — considerably taller than the 15-foot maximum allowed for in the zoning code.
With a static lighted element and a digital element, the sign is also about 100 square feet larger than what’s allowed in city code.
