Maple Grove Reviews Design of Community Center Expansion
Plans for the renovation and expansion of the Maple Grove Community Center are now in the design phase.
The city council will review phase one of the project this week. That phase includes the addition of a third sheet of ice and improvements to the existing arena. It also includes the new architectural look of the updated building.
The exterior design is expected to mirror architecture of neighboring civic campus buildings and new architecture in the park system, city documents revealed.
According to feedback from the Maple Grove Parks and Recreation Board, the arena design also includes “a desire to have physical (verbal) separation from the second rink catwalk and the players bench to control ambitious parents who may disrupt coaches and players,” the documents showed.
Voters approved a sales tax last year to fund about 80 percent of the estimated $110 million project. A combination of state funding, grants and booster club fundraising will pay for the rest.
Minneapolis-based JLG Architects and Golden Valley-based RJM Construction are working on the project.
