Maple Grove Coffee Shop Talks Tariffs, Financial Challenges
The owner of Daily Dose, a coffee shop in Maple Grove, says it’s been tough to keep the business afloat and profitable.
Tariffs raised the cost of coffee beans by as much as 50 percent.
The business also saw a drop in foot traffic during the Operation Metro Surge immigration crackdown.
Now there’s another hit — as gas prices go up, customer visits go down.
“We’re a luxury good,” owner Ben Havn said. “You might get one less coffee a week or cut that out entirely so you can pay for that $60, $70, $80 bill at the gas pump.”
Even after the tariffs settled, Havn said he’s not seeing costs go down, and their profit margins are nearly nonexistent.
“It’s really hard to support our employees the way that they need to be supported through pay increases and benefits, because there are just no margins anymore,” Havn said.
Daily Dose closed its Brooklyn Park location back in 2024 due to rising costs.
Lawmaker Visit
U.S. Rep. Kelly Morrison, a Democrat who represents Minnesota’s Third Congressional District, held a short press conference outside Daily Dose on Monday.
She also held a roundtable with several local business owners to hear their concerns and talk affordability.
Morrison is on the House Committee for Small Business, and she introduced the Small Business RELIEF Act for businesses affected by tariffs.
She said the Trump administration is making it harder for small businesses to succeed, and called on the president to change course.
“Small businesses are the backbone of our communities and the engine of our economy,” Morrison said. “When small businesses thrive, our communities do too.”
She directed her closing statements to the presidential administration: “Listen to the American people, listen to your constituents. And meet us back in Washington so we can pass legislation to make it easier for small businesses to thrive.”
While Morrison said businesses can apply for relief, to her knowledge, none have received any.
In the Twin Cities area, she also said she’s heard from businesses affected by strain from Operation Metro Surge and high gas prices amid conflict in Iran.
