Soaring Coffee Bean Prices Contribute to Brooklyn Park Daily Dose Closure
Daily Dose Cafe and Espresso in Brooklyn Park gave its customers some disappointing news this week.
The shop, located at 9578 Noble Pkwy, is closing. Dec. 31 will be its last day of operation.
Co-owner Ben Havn called the announcement “bittersweet.”
Rising supply costs are partly to blame for the closure.
“In the last year, coffee prices have almost doubled,” Havn said. “You add that to increased labor costs, increased cocoa costs – which we do a lot of — it just, it shrunk the margins.”
Challenging growing seasons have driven up coffee prices to record highs.
Havn also cited new industry trends as a central factor.
“In this area in particular, had a big shift towards delivery,” Havn said. “DoorDash, Uber Eats, Grubhub. That leaves — especially local businesses — with very small margins. And that became almost 25 percent of what we do at this location.”
With their lease wrapping up at the end of the year, the owners decided to consolidate.
Daily Dose has two locations in Maple Grove. One is inside a Park Nicollet clinic, while the other flagship sit-down location is near Grove Circle North and Maple Grove Parkway.
They plan to revamp their flagship shop this winter, taking some of the equipment from the Brooklyn Park location.
Daily Dose Cafe and Espresso is closing its Brooklyn Park location. Its last day of operation is Dec. 31.
They’re sad to be leaving a store they opened seven years ago.
“I love the Brooklyn Park community, I love the area, I love our neighbors and all the friends that we’ve made,” Havn said.
It’s also a difficult goodbye for regular customers like Tom Obermark. It’s a rare day he doesn’t visit Daily Dose for coffee.
“I’d say five to six times a week, sometimes seven or more if I get lunch,” he said.
News of the closure was even more difficult, considering his son has a job at Daily Dose.
“For me, yeah, it’s pretty painful,” he said.
Ali Swatzell, who lives in the neighborhood, comes in for coffee at least once a week.
“I like their coffee, it’s a lot less expensive than Starbucks, and it tastes better — and I’m pretty bummed,” she said. “Yeah, I’m bummed, that’s a bummer.”
The owners are wagering that neighborhood regulars like Obermark and Swatzell will make the trek to their Maple Grove cafe.
“We’re hoping now that we leave — seven minutes down the road on [Highway] 610 — we can gain that clientele back,” Havn said.
