Future Eagle Scout Repairs Bikes for PRISM

4:10 PM | Thursday, June 27, 2019

Sebastian Paynter is working toward earning his Eagle Scout rank, so he is repairing 40 bikes that will be donated to PRISM in Golden Valley. The bikes will be sold on July 13. The food shelf has seen the need for food during the summer months increase by twenty percent in recent years.

Collecting, Repairing Bikes

Sebastian Paynter got the idea to collect and repair bikes when someone from his boy scout troop came across ten bikes that could be donated. He visited churches, called apartment complexes, and connected with friends to round up more than 40 bikes to repair.

“Some have gear problems. Some don’t even have brakes on them,” said Paynter. “Some are beyond fixing, so we salvage them for other bikes.”

Paynter had to keep copious notes to keep the bikes on a schedule to be repaired.

“He had a whole computer list of all bikes with numbers and parts that the bike lacked,” said Jim Arbuckle, who is one of the adult leaders of Paynter’s troop. “Sebastian has had his hands full. Not only getting the group here, but training people who are not so well versed in fixing bikes.”

Meeting a Need

The bikes will be donated to PRISM in Golden Valley, and they come at an opportune time. The nonprofit has seen the need in the summer increase by twenty percent.

“We are not only grateful for the donation, but what most excites us is to have people in the community engaged and wanting to support the community,” said Brianna Miller with PRISM.

The sale will be July 23 from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Brooklyn Park Brothers Attain the Rank of Eagle Scout

Three Brooklyn Park brothers did something few scouts do, and they did it together. The three brothers, all of whom are students at Park Center High School, recently attained the rank of Eagle Scout. They even held their Court of Honor ceremony together. The Moreno Brothers, David, Daniel, and Simon, say it was a combination of sibling rivalry and common interests that led the young men to achieve the rank at the same time.
