Free Bikes 4 Kidz Donation ‘Makes All the Difference in the World’ After Theft
A break-in and theft at the Free Bikes 4 Kidz warehouse in Brooklyn Center resulted in the loss of $13,000 worth of equipment used to repair and refurbish bikes. The theft happened around Halloween and police still do not know who is responsible for it.
“We have a lot of bikes,” said Martinson. “We need a lot of volunteers to do the work. It severely impacted how many volunteers could work at a time, so we could get these bikes out and into the hands of kids who need them the most.”
Executive director Tia Martinson of Free Bikes 4 Kidz MN says Hamernick’s Interior Solutions stepped forward with a check to replace the stolen equipment on Friday.
“It makes all the difference in the world,” said Martinson. “We also had a big support system with people coming in to wanting to volunteer to help us get back on our feet and help us get back on schedule so the bikes that we’ve promised out will be ready for the kids waiting for them.”
Volunteers are able to clean, refurbish and repair about 300 bikes a week.
