Ex-Brooklyn Park Council Member Announces Run for Hortman’s House Seat
A second candidate has announced a run for the Minnesota House seat held by the late state Rep. Melissa Hortman.
Former Brooklyn Park Council Member XP Lee has officially launched his campaign for the House District 34B seat.
Lee served on the council from 2022 through 2024 after winning a special election.
Born in a refugee camp, Lee is the son of Hmong refugees who fled after the Vietnam War.
“He grew up in a working-class family that relied on public assistance—an experience that shaped his values and fueled his lifelong dedication to public service,” read a press release announcing his campaign.
Lee joins current Brooklyn Park City Council Member Christian Eriksen in announcing a run for state office.
Both are DFL candidates. Both also vowed to honor Hortman’s legacy.
“Melissa Hortman wasn’t just a powerful voice at the Capitol—she was our neighbor,” said Lee in the press release. “Her legacy of principled, visionary leadership continues to inspire me.”

XP Lee spoke with CCX News after winning a special city council election in 2022.
Governor Tim Walz declared the special election to be held on Tuesday, Sept. 16. A special primary election would be held on Tuesday, Aug. 12.
