Brooklyn Center Walmart to Permanently Close April 21
On Tuesday, store employees and customers found out the Brooklyn Center Walmart store will permanently close on April 21.
One employee told CCX News that it was news they didn’t see coming.
Customers didn’t either.
“It’s disappointing,” said Victoria Vinton, who lives in Brooklyn Center. “A lot of people come here and shop. We’ve been having issues at this store with theft and stuff, but it’s been like home to most people.”
The store opened as the anchor store for the Single Creek Crossing development in 2012. The location was the site of the former Brookdale Mall, which had been declining for years. Even with the new development, the area continued to be a hot spot for crime. Just a few weeks ago, Brooklyn Center police unveiled a new mobile camera at that location.
The news of the closure still shocked some customers stopping by on Tuesday.
“I’m kind of shocked to believe it. We’ve already lost Target. We don’t have much on the north side for groceries or this one-stop-shop,” said Lisa Beckman. “I’m not Walmart’s biggest fan—it’s what we have here. But now what?”
The Target closed in 2019. There is currently an international food village proposed for the Brooklyn Center Target site.
