Brooklyn Center Nonprofit CAPI Receives $1 Million Federal Grant for Expansion
A charitable organization in Brooklyn Center received a sizable check to expand its reach in the community.
U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar presented CAPI USA with a $1 million check Tuesday afternoon. The money comes from federal tax dollars.
Omar, who represents Minnesota’s Fifth Congressional District, said it’s important for representatives to advocate for small organizations making a difference in their district. For her, CAPI is one of them.
“We look at the earmarking process, or the community project funding process, as an opportunity to bring dollars to community orgs that are addressing the equity gaps in our state,” Omar said. “Especially in our district.”
As an organization, CAPI serves immigrants, refugees and people of color in Hennepin County.
CAPI plans to use the funding to expand its immigrant opportunity center. That expansion will allow them to offer more economic resources for people, including an immigrant business incubator, a tech lab and a space for community events.
CAPI received $2 million from philanthropist Mackenzie Scott earlier this year. That money will also go to their expansion.
