Brooklyn Center Dealership Launches Tamper-Resistant License Plate Program
A Brooklyn Center auto dealership is providing a free service to help make sure criminals won’t use your car’s license plates to commit crimes.
“We have been having a lot of license plate thefts and these security bits will ensure that your license plates are not going to be taken off your vehicle and used on other vehicles,” said Ricky Reynolds, the shop foreman at Luther Brookdale Honda.
Luther Brookdale Honda has partnered with the Brooklyn Center Police Department on a tamper-resistant license plate program.
The dealership will install four tamper-resistant screws for your license plates. The screws make it impossible for criminals to remove the plates without a special tool.
“The benefit of taking advantage of this program is definitely the security of your license plate,” Reynolds said. “You do not want that to fall in the wrong hands. Anybody can take your plate off the way it is now and put it on their car. They can actually commit a crime with it or, you know, anything.”
Brooklyn Center police say that while theft of license plates might seem like a non-issue to some due to their low value, there are many other associated problems:
- The vehicle owner will have to get the license plates replaced and may be subject to traffic stops, depending on how long before they get the plates replaced.
- Other crimes, such as gas drive-offs and thefts, may lead back to the original vehicle owner since their license plate was at the scene.
- Displaying stolen plates can hinder violent crime investigations with a vehicle displaying different plates.
Luther Brookdale Honda offers this service free of charge, Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. They’ll perform the service on all vehicles and no appointment is necessary.
