Brooklyn Center, Brooklyn Park Partner on Juneteenth Celebration
For the first time, Brooklyn Park and Brooklyn Center are partnering to celebrate Juneteenth.
It will be an event for all ages, offering a resource fair, food, family activities and music.
It’s scheduled for a few days after the holiday, on Saturday, June 21 at North Hennepin Community College.
Cindy Hill, a member of the committee that planned the event, said it will be a great partnership that showcases and celebrates the community’s diversity.
She also said it will be an opportunity for people to learn about African American history and culture.
“This is the 160th year of this great celebration,” Hill said. “So, if nothing, come out, find out exactly why this is a national holiday.”
The event this year is called “Planting Seeds of Freedom: Cultivating Healthy and Thriving Brooklyns.”
The TKO Drumline and Knockout Dance Team will lead the parade, which begins at 12:15 p.m.
It features a group of Brooklyn Park youth trained in percussion and dance with a hip-hop flair.
Myauna Devine, a section leader for the dance team, said TKO is a cool group to be a part of.
“It is good to do, like good for your community. And just show people your talent,” Devine said. “[It] keeps people out of trouble, and shows there’s more good in the world than you really think.”
Anyone can be a part of the parade.
Leaders say that more volunteers are also needed to make the event happen. There’s a signup page on the website.
The event goes from 12:15-5 p.m. Hill recommends getting there at 11:45 to enjoy the parade to the fullest.

TKO Drumline members practice in a gazebo in Brooklyn Park. The group will lead the Juneteenth parade next Saturday.
