BCA IDs Brooklyn Center Officers Who Shot Chainsaw-Wielding Suspect
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) has identified the man who was shot by police in Brooklyn Center on June 11 when he allegedly charged at them with a chainsaw.
The agency has also identified five police officers that were involved in the incident.
Who Was Involved
According to the BCA, 23-year-old Damon Constans Jr. was shot by police. He’s in stable condition, but remains hospitalized.
Meanwhile, two Brooklyn Center police officers fired their service weapons during the incident.
Austin Burt, who has about a year and a half of law enforcement experience, and Tarik Kekic, who has six years of law enforcement experience, both fired their weapons. They’ve been placed on critical incident leave.
Three other officers from Brooklyn Park, Crystal and Brooklyn Center fired less-lethal rounds or PepperBall rounds during the incident.
Investigation
The BCA said police were dispatched to a home in the 3200 block of 63rd Avenue on a report of a domestic incident.
The call came from a woman who wanted help removing an man, later identified as Constans, from the home.
Meanwhile, “Constans also called 911 and reported that his mother was holding a knife,” the BCA wrote in a press release.
Police arrested Constans’ mother for second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon.
As his mother was being arrested, Constans went back into the home and armed himself with a chainsaw.
After a long period of negotiation with Constans, police eventually fired less-lethal rounds and PepperBalls at him during an attempt to arrest him.
Constans later exited the home, started the chainsaw and advanced toward police officers, the BCA said.
Two officers, Burt and Kekic, fired their service weapons, striking Constans.
He was transported to the hospital and treated for his wounds.
