Meet Brooklyn Park’s Newest City Council Member, Tony McGarvey
Tony McGarvey won a special election in early August to represent Brooklyn Park’s west district on the city council. The seat was vacated by Susan Pha, who was elected to the state Senate in 2022.
McGarvey says he spent the summer knocking on doors and talking to residents, where he heard a variety of concerns.
“The answers I got were fascinating,” said McGarvey. “Primarily it was public safety, of course we’re all concerned about that and safe streets, more police presence in the southern end of West Brooklyn Park.”
McGarvey says the conversation about chickens came up more than once. Brooklyn Park has discussed changing their chicken ordinance a few times in the past decade. (See story here.)
McGarvey has a long history in the area. He and his wife graduated from Osseo Senior High and moved back to the area in 2006.
How does McGarvey feel about being elected? He says he feels a mix of relief and gratitude, and he’s humbled too.
