Mayor’s Minutes: Brooklyn Center’s April Graves
Brooklyn Center Mayor April Graves spoke recently with CCX Media’s Dave Kiser about a number of topics.
Highway 252
In March, the City of Brooklyn Center was notified by the Minnesota Department of Transportation that it had been directed by federal transportation officials to remove all environmental justice criteria from its evaluation of the Highway 252 improvement project. Graves said city council passed a motion to request MNDOT not abandon those principles as it works on any environmental impact studies on any possible projects related to the highway in the future.
Juneteenth
Mayor Graves said Brooklyn Center will partner with Brooklyn Park for this year’s Juneteenth celebration at North Hennepin Community College. The event will be Saturday, June 21 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
“We wanted to still be able to provide an important celebration around Juneteenth, but we wanted to also save some money,” said Graves.
Neighborhood Meetings
This summer, the city will once again host a series of neighborhood meetings in parks across Brooklyn Center. It’s a chance for residents to meet face-to-face with city leaders and city staff.
“Every summer we typically hit different parks,” said Graves. “Every three years every park will get a visit.”
Duncan the Dolphin is Back!
The city will host Duncan’s Day of Summer Safety on Saturday, May 31 at the Brooklyn Center Community Center. The centerpiece of the swimming and outdoor safety event will be the mascot, Duncan the Dolphin.
“Please come join us and take advantage of this opportunity,” said Graves.
Health Fair
The Brooklyn Center Community Health Fair will once again take place at Brooklyn Center Community Schools on Saturday, August 16 from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Families can come and find resources from the community to help with healthcare and wellness needs, along with plenty of free available resources. The city is still looking for sponsors and vendors.
“It’s just gotten bigger and bigger,” said Graves. “Come out and get valuable resources for you and your family.”
