Wayzata Legion Baseball Falls to Host Team in Delano 4th of July Final
The Wayzata I Post 118 American legion baseball team advanced to the championship game of the Delano Stars and Stripes 4th of July tournament, but fell 4-1 to Delano Post 377 in the championship game.
It’s the first time Delano has won the tournament. Edina had won the last four and Wayzata was champion in 2016, 2017, and 2018.
The Defenders scored two runs on an error in the first inning, then tacked on two key insurance runs in the sixth on a base hit by Carson Purkey.
Tyler Esposito drove in Wayzata’s lone run with a single in the fourth inning.
Teague Collings went the distance on the mound for Delano, and escaped a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the seventh.
The game ended on a tag play at the plate as Delano catcher Ethan Engelmann blocked a pitch that was in the dirt and bounced high in the air off his body, recovering the ball just in time to tag the lead runner trying to score.
