Wayzata Boys Win Section 5AA Swimming and Diving
The Wayzata boys swimming and diving team won seven of 12 events and qualified athletes in 10 of 12 as the Trojans won the Section 5AA title.
Wayzata finished with 571 points, well ahead of runner-up Maple Grove (375).
Wayzata freshman Nathan Carr set a new section record in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 50.60 seconds, breaking the record set by Wayzata’s Sam Kennedy in 2019. Carr also won the 100 backstroke.
Maple Grove’s Logan Cyr was a double winner, taking firsts in both the 200 and 500 yard freestyle races.
Wayzata swept all three relay events (200 yard medley relay and the 200 and 400 free relay races).
Other individual winners for Wayzata included Henry Ross (Diving), and John Kirchner (100 Free).
Armstrong, Champlin Park, Osseo and Park Center were the other local teams in the meet.
The state meet starts Thursday at the University of Minnesota with the Class A finals- featuring six-time defending state champion Breck/Blake- scheduled for Saturday at noon. The Class AA finals begin Saturday at 6:00 pm.
