Park Center Softball Team Hopes to Keep Building
It’s very possible there won’t be a spring high school sports season in 2020 in Minnesota, but the players and coaches in the Park Center softball program are trying to stay optimistic.
The COVID-19 pandemic has closed schools and halted all spring sports activities through at least May 4.
While it’s a tough situation for many athletes and programs, the Pirates softball program was hoping to continue some recent progress.
The Pirates improved from zero wins to six last season, and they felt good about on and off field improvements made in the offseason.
“We’re also super excited about being re-assigned to Section 6AAA (from the largest class, AAAA) as we now have a chance to win some games in sections, which hasn’t been the case for a while” said Park Center coach Curt Cardinal.
Cardinal says he and his coaching staff have provided players with some ideas for strength and conditioning work and suggestions as simple as playing catch with mom or dad or siblings.
They’ve also provided players with links to softball training videos and websites.
“We suggested they try to spend one hour per day on these softball related activities” said Cardinal.
It’s looking more and more likely that there may not be a softball season, but as Cardinal says “a slice of pie is better than no pie at all” as he and other coaches and players hold out a little hope that there could at least be an abbreviated 2020 season.
