Maranatha Christian Academy Boys Basketball Wins Wild 5AA Semifinal
The Maranatha Christian Academy boys basketball team won a wild back-and-forth game before prevailing in two overtimes, beating Rockford 79-71 in the Section 5AA semifinals.
The Mustangs trailed by double digits in the first half, took the lead early in the second half before the Rockets went back ahead.
A Jeremiah LaVelle three-point play put MCA ahead by nine points with just 1:12 to play. But the Rockets rallied to tie on a driving lay-up by Derek Pepin in the final seconds, tying the game at 56 and sending it to overtime.
After each team scored three points in the first OT, Maranatha outscored Rockford 18-10 in the second overtime to win 79-71.
Maranatha (23-6) now plays top-seeded Minneapolis North (24-6) for the Section 5AA title Friday night at Augsburg University.
