Maple Grove Legion Baseball Wins Substate Opener
The Maple Grove American Legion baseball team broke a 1-1 tie with four runs in the sixth inning to beat the St. Michael Golds 5-1 in the Substate 11 tournament.
Maple Grove is the number two seed for the tournament.
David Salz drove in John Volkers with a base hit to break the tie and put Maple Grove up 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth.
Carson Frank then delivered a two-run triple to stretch the lead to 4-1.
Maple Grove advances to Friday afternoon’s winner’s bracket semifinals, where they’ll face the St. Michael Mikes.
Top seed Osseo edged Big Lake 5-4 to also advance to Friday’s winner’s bracket semis, where they will face Anoka.
The Substate 11 tournament is at Osseo’s Memorial Field.
