Maple Grove Boys Golf Wins 5AAA Title
The Maple Grove boys golf team won its third straight Section 5AAA championship Thursday, beating runner-up Spring Lake Park by nine strokes.
The Crimson came into the second day of the 36-hole tournament one shot behind the Panthers but overcame the deficit to earn a spot at next month’s state tournament.
Aidan Steel led the Crimson Thursday with a one-under par round of 71. Zach Johnson shot a 72, Charlie Steenerson a 75 and Davis Tripp a 77.
Steel and Johnson tied Spring Lake Park’s Chase Birdwell for medalist honors with two-day totals of 146.
Sam Kyes of Champlin Park shot rounds of 75 and 74 (149) to grab one of the individual qualifying spots for state.
The state tournament for Class AAA is June 10-11 at Bunker Hills Golf Club.
