Cooper Girls Basketball Wins Home Opener Over Maranatha
The Cooper girls basketball team won its home opener Friday, beating Maranatha Christian Academy 72-41.
The Hawks jumped out to an early 17-3 lead, creating turnovers with their pressure defense.
MCA battled back to within seven before Cooper surged again to take a 45-23 lead into halftime.
They were never threatened in the second half.
Somah Kamara had 22 points in the first half and 32 total for Cooper.
Zoe Simmons had 11, with Jordyn Cooke, Nyema Montgomery and Amiyah Rulford each scoring nine points for Cooper.
Janiya Wright had 19 to lead Maranatha.
Maranatha is coached this season by Hall of Famer Faith Johnson Patterson, who won five state titles at Minneapolis North and three more at DeLaSalle.
Cooper’s Ebony Rich earned her first win in her first season as head coach of the Hawks.
