Cooper Football Holds off Armstrong to Advance to State Playoffs
The Cooper football team built a 14-0 halftime lead then held off Robbinsdale district rival Armstrong for a 14-13 win in the Section 5AAAAA championship.
Cooper broke a string of five straight section final losses spread out over the past decade.
They advanced to the state playoffs for the second time in school history. The first was in 1996.
Cooper scored on the final play of the first quarter, with Joe Russell throwing to David Connors for a 7-0 lead.
An interception by Donte Williams, one of two for him in the game, set up a Danari Connors touchdown to make it 14-0.
Armstrong battled back in the second half.
On a 4th and goal late in the third quarter, Jamen Malone found Eustace McGowan for a touchdown to make it 14-7 after three.
Midway through the fourth, Ma;lone connected with Seth Newbern for a touchdown to pull the Falcons within 14-13.
David Connors broke through to block the ensuing extra point though, and that play sealed the 14-13 win for Cooper.
The Hawks meet Alexandria in the state class AAAAA quarterfinals Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Osseo High School.
