Armstrong Football Holds Off Cooper to Return to State
The Armstrong football team got a much tougher challenge from Robbinsdale district rival Cooper than in their regular season meeting, but the Falcons prevailed 28-20 over the Hawks in the Section 5AAAAA championship game Friday.
Cooper’s swarming defense shut down Armstrong early, and a 43-yard touchdown pass from Beckham Van Voorst to Semaj’ Young gave the Hawks a 7-0 lead after one quarter.
Armstrong scored twice in the second, on a run by quarterback Dawson Franke and then a deep throw from Franke to Farelle Deline to give the Falcons a 14-7 halftime lead.
Each team scored twice in the second half and the Falcons’ defense held Cooper on downs late in the game to preserve the win and a third straight trip to state for Armstrong.
The Falcons face Alexandria Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Monticello High School in the class AAAAA quarterfinals.
