Armstrong Football Edges Cooper in Double Overtime
The Armstrong football team stayed unbeaten this season with a 20-14 double overtime win over Robbinsdale district rival Cooper Thursday night.
Armstrong broke a 0-0 tie late in the second quarter when Dawson Franke hit running back Kevon Johnson over the middle for a 20-yard touchdown to make it 7-0 Falcons.
Early in the third quarter, Cooper forced a Johnson fumble and Emmanuel Karmo scooped it up and scored to tie the game at 7-7. It stayed that way through regulation.
Johnson scored his second touchdown of the night in the first overtime to give Armstrong a 14-7 lead.
Cooper quickly answered with a Kameron Fox to Karmo touchdown pass and the Hawks tied it 14-14 to force a second overtime.
Armstrong blocked a Cooper field goal attempt in the second OT, then won the game on a short touchdown plunge by Johnson to end a thrilling back and forth battle.
Johnson carried the ball 41 times for 157 yards on the night.
Armstrong, ranked fifth in class AAAAA, is now 3-0. Cooper, rated eight in AAAAA, drops to 2-1.
